In August 2002 the Federal Communications Commission approved a plan by cellular providers to remove ANALOG service from their towers. Providers are replacing ANALOG service with DIGITAL and all ANALOG service will be eliminated.
All ANALOG cellular devices are effected including Web Based GPS Tracking Systems that use "AERIS", "CDPD", and "CELLEMETRY" services which account for 95% of the products on the market.
Many of the "ONSTAR" units will also be effected.
GPS Tracking Systems that use CDMA, PCS or GSM digital technology will not be effected. While these systems cost a little more to purchase they provide a better return for the money for Business and Personal users because they will be in service for many years.
For the short-term user Digital Cellular GPS tracking systems provide activation using cellular phone cards. You only pay for service when you need it and there are no monthly charges.
For the long term user Digital Cellular GPS tracking provides enhanced services including high speed history download capability. Competition is reducing the cost while increasing the features.
For short term and long-term users CDMA, PCs and GSM Digital Cellular GPS systems are the best deal.
Note: In an effort to confuse consumers some advertisements mention DGPS suggesting digital cellular technology. "DGPS" is an acronym for Differential GPS. Most systems are "DGPS" compatible but the term relates to navigation not cellular technology. Don't be fooled!
